Celebrate US Presidents and Their Families This President’s Day

February 12, 2018, is President’s Day where we celebrate the birth of the first president and founding father of the United States; George Washington. While George Washington was married and had step-children, let’s look at a few more of our presidents and learn about their families.

Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States and had four sons with his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln.

  1. Edward Lincoln 1846-1850,
  2. Willie Lincoln 1850-1862.
  3. Robert Lincoln 1843-1926
  4.  Thomas “Tad” Lincoln 1853-1871.

Robert was the only child to live to adulthood and have children. The Lincolns’ last descendant, great-grandson Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith, died in 1985.

Robert also went on to a career in politics as he was the Secretary of War from 1881-1885.

Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th President of the United States and had four children among two wives; Alice and Edith.

His children were Alice, Theodore III, Kermit, Ethel, Archibald, and Quentin.

Theodore III went on to quite an extensive career in politics as he was Secretary to the Navy and Governor General of the Philipines.

Alice, Kermit, Ethel, Archibald and Quentin all served the United States in different capacities either by serving in World War I and II or with the Red Cross.

Fun Fact: Theodore Roosevelt is also the 5th cousin of Franklin D Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the United States.

John F Kennedy

John F Kennedy was the 35th President of the United States. He had two children with his wife, Jackie, that survived infancy; Caroline and John F Kennedy Jr.

Caroline went on to her own political career as the US Ambassador to Japan and a run at the US Senate.

John F Kennedy Jr founded the political magazine George but wasn’t in politics himself.

Fun Fact: John’s brother, Robert “Bobbie”, was also a US Senator from New York.

Ronald Reagan

Ronald Reagan was the 40th President of the United States. Ronald started his career as a movie star in Hollywood.

He had three children with his first wife Jane. Two biological children and adopted a third. He had two additional children with his second wife, Nancy.

His children went on to have careers in entertainment as well as advocates for various political campaigns and causes.

George W. Bush

George W Bush was the 43rd President of the United States and had two daughters (fraternal twins) with his wife Laura.

Fun Fact: George W’s father, George H. W. Bush was the 41st President of the United States

As you can see, our presidents had a personal and private side with traditional family values and instilled serving the country to their children as many of them, not all listed, went on to have their own careers in politics following in the footsteps of those before them.
